Article processing charges to publish in Medwave

Rationale

All of the articles published in the journal are open access. Users are prompted to register at no cost in the journal. This will also enable a monthly table of contents alert. Open access ensures that everyone has access to new knowledge, both professionals, patients, and stakeholders. We are advocates of open communities that share instead of putting up paywalls between people and knowledge. However, publishing a high-quality scientific journal entails costs, and since there is no public financing to help us, we must charge author fees.

There is significant editorial work put into managing each manuscript that is submitted. These costs have to be covered. Consequently, we charge a fixed "submission" fee for all manuscripts submitted to our system. We do not grant discounts on this fee except when a manuscript is authorized to proceed without any charges, based on specific reasons that must be approved by the editor-in-chief or are specifically pointed out in our waiver policy.

Article processing charges

When an author submits a manuscript to our online submission system, the editorial office will check if the submission is aligned with the purpose and scope of the journal. If it is, the corresponding author will be prompted to pay a submission fee for the peer review editorial process. If the manuscript is deemed not aligned with the journal's purpose, the submission will be rejected, and the manuscript will be archived. No submission fee will be charged.

Charges effective until September 30, 2022

If the submitted manuscript is accepted to be published in the journal, the corresponding author must ensure that a fee of USD 850 is paid. This is the publication charge. The publication fee for research protocols is USD 500. The publication fee for letters to the editor is USD 100 unless the letter refers to a topic covered in the journal, wherein no charges will be levied.

Charges effective as of October 1, 2022

A submission fee of USD 100 will always be charged.

A publication fee of USD 900 will be charged if the manuscript is accepted for publication. This fee applies to research, reviews, economic evaluation studies, and case reports.

A publication fee of USD 600 will be charged for other article types (Features, Clinical updates, research protocols) if accepted for publication.

Letters to the editor and commentaries do not have article processing charges.

Initial evaluation of a submitted manuscript

When an author submits a manuscript through our online system, we will check whether the submitted paper is aligned or not with the journal's purpose, scope or aims. If so, the author will be expected to pay the submission fee to advance into the peer review phase. If the article is not deemed fit for the journal, it will be desk rejected and no charges will be made.

How to pay

Once the editorial office verifies that the submitted manuscript is consistent with the journal’s purpose, it will notify the authors that they have to pay the submission fee. The authors will receive a PayPal invoice for USD 100. Only after the office has checked that the amount has been paid, the manuscript will be assessed to see whether formal requisites are complied with. After verifying compliance, the manuscript will go out to peer-review.

Once the manuscript is accepted

If the manuscript is accepted, the authors will receive a PayPal invoice or instructions for bank transfer. The article will be copyedited, translated, and prepared for publication only after receiving payment.

Invoice

Authors may request that invoices be issued to their institutions or to whomever they instruct. Medwave Estudios Limitada, the Journal's publisher, will issue the invoice.

Can I request for a waiver?

We urge all authors to make an effort to contribute to the financial sustenance of the journal, as this benefits us all. If there is an author, or a group of authors, that do not have sufficient funds to pay the full fee, we will request a contribution according to their means. Authors must express their requests at the beginning of the submission process in the cover letter. We will decide on a case-by-case basis.

Discounts and waivers (applicable only for publication fee)

The following discounts apply only to the publication fee; the submission fee does not consider discounts or waivers.

If according to the journal's editorial waiver policies, as expressed in the following table, you are entitled to a discount, you must request the waiver in the cover letter that accompanies the initial submission, otherwise, no waiver or discount will be granted. You must also include the justification for the waiver or discount, according to the reasons below.
